We all have to start somewhere, and for the young rugby player this is it! Players learn the basics of rugby using the 'ripping' of flags from a belt as an indication of a tackle. The flagged player must pass BACKWARD to a team mate. Skill and speed are developed through rugby specific drills.  This is all about having fun and learning the game! Under 8 teams will be involved in 3 to 4 rugby tournaments/festivals in the season.

It is definitely not too late to start your Rugby journey here. The majority of our players were still new to the game last year. Emphasis is placed on running with the ball, passing, attack, defense and scoring. Drills are used to develop speed and skill with a little more competitive edge to the outcomes. More game play is introduced in practice.

In this age group players move into the introduction to contact phase of development.  They learn to safely tackle, engage in rucks, 3 man uncontested scrums and line-outs.  

 

They will also continue to learn ball handling, passing, and defense but will also learn more 'senior' rugby specific areas such as game strategy and set-plays.

At the under 14 level we begin to put more focus on the specific positions of rugby, adding more structure to game play and allowing everyone to get a feel for what it’s like to play every position: from ‘prop’ and ‘lock’, out to the ‘winger’. Ball handling, passing, and defense will continue to be a main focus...always working on the basics!

Those who want to give rugby a try for the first time at the under 16 or 18 level, never fear! The basics are always the number one focus at any level, and we are always working on tackling to make sure everyone is comfortable and safe. At this level, players will start to develop their skills within each position, and more strategic game play.
